That question has suddenly become much more interesting after BMW, Toyota, Bosch and energy giant Repsol launched a real-world trial of vehicles running on 100% renewable petrol. Unlike previous laboratory demonstrations, this isn't taking place behind closed doors. It is happening on public roads in Spain using ordinary production vehicles that have required virtually no mechanical modifications.
For motorcycle riders, this could become one of the most significant developments we've seen in years.
A Future Without Throwing Everything Away

Around twenty BMW and Toyota vehicles are spending six months operating entirely on Repsol's renewable Nexa 95 petrol using existing filling stations and existing engines.
If successful, the implications stretch far beyond cars.

Renewable petrol doesn't eliminate emissions from the exhaust. Combustion is still combustion. The environmental benefit comes from where the fuel originates.
Instead of extracting fresh fossil carbon from underground, renewable petrol is produced from sustainable waste materials and renewable feedstocks that comply with European renewable fuel standards.
In simple terms, it's about reducing the overall carbon impact across the fuel's entire life cycle. That's a very different conversation from pretending the exhaust suddenly becomes emission-free.
Could This Rescue Motorcycle Manufacturers?
Here's where things become really interesting.
Manufacturers like BMW Motorrad, Honda, Yamaha, Ducati, Triumph and Kawasaki have invested billions refining internal combustion engines.
Many are already exploring synthetic and renewable fuels alongside electrification. If fuels like Nexa 95 become commercially viable across Europe, manufacturers may not need to abandon petrol motorcycles as quickly as many predicted.
Instead, future legislation could potentially allow combustion engines running exclusively on certified renewable fuels.
That's exactly why companies such as BMW continue talking about "technology neutrality" rather than placing every bet on one solution.
The Biggest Challenge Isn't The Motorcycle
The real hurdle won't be building motorcycles that can use renewable petrol. They're already capable. The challenge is producing enough fuel.
At present, Repsol's renewable petrol is available only at a relatively small number of filling stations in Spain. Scaling production to serve millions of vehicles across Europe would require substantial investment and a reliable supply of sustainable raw materials.
That won't happen overnight.

Too often the debate has been framed as petrol versus electric.
Real life isn't usually that simple. Motorcycling has always been about freedom, choice and using the right bike for the right job. Perhaps the future deserves the same approach.
Electric motorcycles will undoubtedly have their place.
Hydrogen may find a role.
Synthetic fuels continue to develop.
Now renewable petrol has entered the conversation in a very serious way.
The exciting part isn't that this trial proves renewable petrol is the complete answer. It's that it proves the future may not have to rely on just one answer.
For riders who love the sound, feel and character of an internal combustion motorcycle, that's perhaps the most encouraging news we've heard in a long time. After all, saving the planet is important. But if we can do it without saying goodbye to the bikes we've spent our lives loving, surely that's a future worth exploring.
